Formed in Omaha, Nebraska in 1988, 311 originally went by the name "Unity", but lacked two of the five core members. The band’s final lineup started to take shape when P-Nut and SA Martinez joined Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney, and Chad Sexton in the group "Unity". By 1991, the band’s name was changed to 311, and soon after they released three singles on their own independent label, gaining little recognition outside the Midwest. It was then fifteen months after the release of their third album, "311", when the band first gained national success. The album contained a Billboard number one, and number two hit with, "Down" and "All Mixed up" respectively, and is triple platinum today. From that point on, 311 grew from a Midwestern band to a world renowned rock group.
311 is rooted heavily in funk, rock, reggae, and hip-hop, and their eclectic sound leads to a very diverse audience. 311 is famous for a cult-like following that they have picked up over the years of touring. Their live concert is known for its high energy and fan interaction. On March 11, 2004, 311 started a tradition of playing In June of 2009, 311 released their ninth major album, debuting at number three on the Billboard album chart.
