It’s time for some new words in this space. I hope you all had a great ‘06/’07 hockey season. I know I did. I picked Anaheim Ducks at the beginning of the season to win Lord Stanley’s Cup and they went out and did just that, sitting Ottawa Senators down in 5 games. It was nice to pick a winner and all, but I easily should have put my money where my mouth was and wagered a hundred bucks, as the Ducks went off at 15-1 odds of winning hockey’s illustrious prize and would have netted me a tidy sum of cash. Maybe next year I will pony up, although typing here right now I have no idea who I feel will raise the Cup in ’08. Red Sox look very good this year. I think this is another magical year for the Sox with a little less drama and a little more overall skill. Me not being a baseball guy at all, talked of this year’s team’s almost mystical presence to Hamilton to which he responded ever so knowingly and dryly “it’s the pitching.” The guys on the mound do seem to have it going on. I most appreciate how Kevin Youkilis is monstrous this year. Here’s a guy who started as a catcher with Lowell Spinners (Red Sox A league team) and this year is on the MLB All-Star ballot for first base. I know of no hockey equivalent player talent who started in the A-league minors to make it up to the big show in the NHL. Recently I started writing a bi-weekly column in Spare Change newspaper, which is mostly sold by homeless folks to help give them some extra income. So if someone comes up to selling one, don’t shrug them off and walk away, pick it up and support homeless empowerment and read my column. Already I’ve written stories about the ‘BCN Rumble and just finished a three-part piece that takes a trip through all of the original music clubs in Boston I could think of. And there are a lot of them. The column is called “Static Free.” Look for it. Since my last writing here, I picked up another gig scouting performers and bands for SESAC, a performing rights organization. They represent on the huge end of performers, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, and newly acquired Rush. Other bands who are signed to them include Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, New Found Glory, Coheed & Cambria, Hatebreed, EL-P, Brand New, you get the picture. They have a website at www.sesac.com (link please) if you want to check it out. I use to do kind of a similar job for Columbia Records, NYC for 6 years, but that ended a few years ago, when they merged distribution with BMG. The folks at SESAC are great and treat me well. Have a good summer and I’ll speak with you here soon. Don’t hesitate to email me any questions, opinions, rants in the meantime. Also check out my myspace, which is obviously going to more up-to-date than this one page is.
