All About HD Radio [Click HERE for the Official HD Radio Website]
What is HD Radio?
HD (High Definition) Radio is a digital signal broadcast of our station, along with our FM signal that provides CD quality sound. It's clearer and more distortion free than present FM, satellite or internet radio. And there's no interference, no multipath, or picket-fencing. It's as good as the CD playback on your home stereo. Because we've invested in a completely digital studio and transmitter, we're the only rock station in Boston currently who can bring it to you in a completely digital environment. Every piece of equipment from our microphone to your receiver is 100% digital.
Any new programs?
Yes! Because of the digital transmission, we are able to provide multiple channels of programming. This means that with a new HD Radio, you're able to tune into WBCN HD2- "Indie 104-1". This is a completely new radio station running commercial free offering a different music mix and selections. It's all free…No monthly subscription payments. On an HD Radio, you'll be able to choose between these channels, just like any other radio station.
How do I hear it?
Because it's digital, you'll need a new radio to hear HD radio's full benefit. There are some models in stores right now, and they'll start becoming more plentiful this year. What else does HD provide?
How about title and artist information for every song we play? HD radios are also able to display far more text information than your current radio. We know that you want to know the title and artist of songs that we play and we're finally able to bring that information to you, as each song is aired. You'll be able to see the station's call letters, the title and artist of the song that's playing, and traffic and weather information. We'll give you that information when you need it, without stopping the music.
How's HD Radio different than satellite?
HD Radio is the latest innovation from your local broadcasters; the same people who have brought you free, over-the-air programming for the past 75 years. We operate locally, serving the Boston area exclusively under a license from the FCC. We provide our programming, personalities and community service to you via advertiser-supported free radio. Yes, you'll need a new digital, HD Radio in your car or your home to get the full benefit of HD Radio, but there are no monthly fees. Satellite radio is a relatively new national subscription service that provides automated music and live talk programming along with some channels that are a duplication of TV or cable audio. They require a monthly subscription fee from $10 to $15 per month for as long as you wish to subscribe, as well as a completely new radio in your home or car. Contrary to what many people think, satellite radio does not duplicate or carry your local Boston radio stations.
These new HD Radios...how much do they cost?
HD Radios are coming onto the market locally. In the near future, you'll be able to choose from approximately a half-dozen receivers for the car and home at various price points, all the way from table radios to home theater/audio units. The most inexpensive way to get HD is a $299 HD stereo tabletop radio from Boston Acoustics, JVC and Panasonic, now offer HD Radios for the car. The quickest way to get into HD is to purchase a multi-function receiver from Radiosophy. They're taking advance orders now on the internet. The rollout of new products is going to rapidly accelerate this year and car manufacturers will begin to offer HD Radio as an inexpensive option on your next new car. Be sure to ask your dealer about it!
